Scheme Introduction

1a space is experienced in organising local and international arts and culture activities and programmes. With our experience, we are venturing to initiate a large scale workshop called “Travel to learn in the city”. We attempt to compliment the education reform in Hong Kong, and aim to cultivate “a large pool of creative talents and a discerning audience” (point 59 in the press release “2007-08 Policy Address by Chief Executive (7)”), which is to encourage creativity and raise interest, awareness and ability in art appreciation. The programme is divided into three stages across 18 months, reaching into schools and communities to further growth and development in arts and culture. Through collaboration with school teachers and teaching artists, the programme will construct a new and sustainable model for teaching the visual arts.
Study trips – a kind of multi-sensorial and experiential learning that takes place outside of the classroom, are not new to teachers and students of the visual arts. Few of those involved in art education today would say that they had never taken students to art exhibitions or performances. However, the existing “study trips” are at best occasions where students absorb the facts specific to the exhibition, and are inadequate in encouraging independent thinking and pro-active knowledge building.
It is with awareness to this existing inadequacy in arts education that 1a Space is inviting teachers and artists, and subsequently students, to participate in a series of art and cultural activities and workshops that encourage active art appreciation. We hope to enhance the ability of art teachers and enrich their learning and teaching experience; at the same time, situated learning will allow students to develop creative and critical thinking. Online sharing platforms and visual arts learning groups will be created to promote “Travel to learn in the city” to the entire network of Hong Kong schools.
